چکیده

background: bone loss is one of the hallmarks of periodontitis. hence, a major focus of research into periodontal regeneration has concentrated on the initiation of osteogenesis. osteoinduction requires the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts with subsequent formation of new bone. the present study has been carried out to evaluate periodontal bone regeneration in intrabony defects using osteostimulative oleaginous calcium hydroxide suspension osteora® (metacura, germany) in combination with osteoconductive bone graft ossifi ™ (equinox medical technologies, holland). materials and methods: a total of 22 sites in patients within the age range of 25-50 years, with intrabony defects were selected and divided into two groups (group a and group b) by using the split-mouth design technique. all the selected sites were assessed with the clinical parameters such as - plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession and radiographic parameter to assess the amount of defect fill. mann-whitey u-test and wilcoxon signed rank test has been used to fi nd the signifi cance of study parameters on continuous scale for the comparison between the mesial and distal bone levels. p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically signifi cant. results: osteora® in combination with osteoconductive ossifi ™ showed better regenerative potential and more signifi cant amount of bone fi ll in periodontal intrabony defects than when ossifi ™ was used alone (p = 0.039). conclusion: osteora® can be used as an adjunct to osteoconductive bone grafts, as an osteostimulating agent in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. key words: bone substitutes, calcium hydroxide, osteogenesis, periodontal bone loss, periodontal regeneration

The role of the osteoconductive scaffold in synthetic bone graft.

Autogenous bone is regarded as the gold standard for bone graft materials as it provides 3 elements necessary to generate and maintain bone: scaffolding for osteoconduction, growth factors for osteoinduction, and progenitor cells for osteogenesis. Allograft is more limited than autograft in these essential elements and yields more variable clinical results. Composite synthetic grafts offer an a...

Bone graft substitutes in periodontal and peri-implant bone regeneration.

Regenerative medicine provides different therapy alternatives alongside gold standard autogenous grafts for the treatment of periodontal or peri-implant osseous defects. Continuing progress in the field of alloplastic bone substitutes has yielded promising solutions to the appropriate indications with the membrane technique either alone or in combination with enamel matrix derivatives. Their cl...

Bone graft substitutes: a comparative qualitative histologic review of current osteoconductive grafting materials.

This paper investigated the osteogenic potential of 6 osteoconductive grafting materials derived from human, bovine, and synthetic sources: HTR, BOP, Biogran, Laddec, Dembone, and Osteograf. Twenty-eight New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. The active group consisted of 24 animals and the control group consisted of 4 animals. The median condyle of each tibia was drilled with a 5-mm-diam...

Effect of osteoconductive hyaluronate hydrogels on calvarial bone regeneration

BACKGROUND Without exploitation of possibly immunogenic and carcinogenic bone morphogenetic protein, we developed simple but clinically feasible artificial bone graft using osteoconductive hyaluronate (HA) hydrogels and bioactive MegaGen synthetic bone (MGSB). METHODS HA hydrogels were synthesized by the crosslinking reaction between carboxyl groups of HA and amine groups of gelatin (GEL). Th...

A randomized controlled clinical study of periodontal tissue regeneration using an extracellular matrix-based resorbable membrane in combination with a collagenated bovine bone graft in intrabony defects

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of regenerative therapy with a collagenated bone graft and resorbable membrane in intrabony defects, and to evaluate the effects of the novel extracellular matrix (ECM)-based membrane clinically and radiologically. Methods Periodontal tissue regeneration procedure was performed using an ECM-based resorbable membrane in combi...
